Leading commentators warn of ‘fateful times’ in Israel — of a "regime with two authorities”; of a constitutional crisis and anarchy, with warnings of “deranged police violence”, and warnings of Israel having reached the point “at which the only solution is liable to be bloodshed” and “civil war”. Opposition leaders have called for civil disobedience; anti-government protestors have warned they will shut down the economy, and have warned of a “huge wave of resistance among reserve soldiers” that is emerging.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu is defiant — and a recent poll by Ma’ariv showed that a majority (57%) of Israelis support the return to war in Gaza, with this figure rising to 90% amongst Netanyahu coalition’s voters.
Under the auspices of war, Netanyahu is building a dictatorship, writes Ben Caspit:
This is the final stage in the transformation of Israel, once a Western parliamentary democracy, to a dark Middle Eastern dictatorship. Loyalty is to the king, not to the kingdom. Whoever does not swear in the name of the wife, the son and the Holy Spirit, will go to hell. It's that simple … he has undermined all other bodies, institutions and symbols of the collapsing Israeli kingdom in the face of the dictator … Today we can already say that we are cooked. The frog is cooked properly. Soft and ripe. It happened slowly, but consistently. The man responsible for the destruction and massacre, which resulted in an endless war … is now building a dictatorship under the auspices of that war and in the face of the accumulated fatigue of the serving and productive public. We must not let this happen … The Netanyahu government has no public trust. We see this in all the polls … We will not have another chance to save this country. We are in fateful times like no other.
